For most women pregnancy and childbirth are joyful experiences. However, for some mothers the pregnancy and postpartum period may be challenging, due to mental health problems.
Mental health problems in this period are usually easy to recognize, treatable and generally have a good outcome. However, if untreated they may have adverse outcomes on both the mother and her infant.
Women are vulnerable to developing postpartum mental health problems lasting from a few days to 12 months after childbirth.
Some mothers may have mental health problems even during pregnancy.
The Perinatal Psychiatric Service at NIMHANS, Bangalore is dedicated to helping the mother, the mother-infant dyad, husbands and families who need treatment, support and guidance for any mental health problem related to pregnancy or child birth.
